The National Institute for Space Research's deforestation alert system reports that 322 km2 of natural vegetation was destroyed last month. It vastly exceeds the 199 km2 lost in the same month in 2022
Compared to the same month in 2022, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon surged by 61.8% in February. It is the most extensive destruction ever recorded in this month since Brazil began documenting Amazon deforestation in real time, in 2015.
