Bukele: El Salvador went a year without a murder
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, who declared war on drug gangs, announced Friday that the country has gone a full year without a murder since taking office in 2019
"May 10, 2023, is National Day Without Homicides. That's a year without homicides," he proudly declared on Twitter. The claim that El Salvador had zero homicides for a year on 5-10-23 is tricky. The current year-to-date murder rate is .04 homicides per day, and in the 2022 calendar year, which would be included in 2022, there were 495. The Salvadoran National Police provided these numbers. In fact, what Bukele referred to is the "total number of homicide-free days since 2019," according to a source at the Presidential Communications Secretariat.
