Colombia's new course. What changes with Petro in the presidency for the United States (and China)
China might be the great winner in such a "social revolution," further undermining the U.S. geopolitical influence in the area. (My daily 'Review of the press will be online in a couple of hours')
Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego will serve as Colombia's president until 2026. With 50.4 percent of the popular vote, he won yesterday's elections. This 62-year-old politician defeated Rodolfo Hernández, an engineer that got 47.3 percent of the vote. The head of the 30-party leftist coalition Pacto Histórico promised to change Colombia's production model and tax structure, increase social investment, disband ESMAD, the mobile police riot squads, and extend the terms of the FARC peace agreement to the ELN Marxist guerrillas. Additionally, he has sworn that he won't carry out expropriations, much as Chávez did after winning his first election in 1998.
