Cuba purchased more chicken from the United States and at a lower cost, but the consumer pays a 13-fold markup
The price of two kilos is sold for 1,500 pesos, 12 USD, more than half the minimum monthly wage, or 8.50 if people change on the foreign exchange black market.
The Cuban state spent 26% less in January 2023 than in December 2022 for a higher amount of chicken, an 11% increase, by taking advantage of a drop in the product's price on the foreign market to $0.93 per kilo. Nonetheless, the cost to the general public keeps on growing. A chicken weighing about 4.4 pounds costs an average of 1,500 Cuban pesos, or about $12, on Revolico.com, which is more than half the monthly Cuban minimum salary. A kilo of chicken costs the customer 13 times more than the dictatorship spent for importation.
