López Obrador's new crackdown on the press: he has closed the Notimex agency
AMLO said there is no longer a need for the national news agency and noted that its carefully orchestrated morning briefings are sufficient to keep the country and the world informed
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is shutting down Notimex, the national news agency that has long been on strike against the director AMLO appointed to head it. Founded in 1968, Notimex was, by and large, an apolitical service that mainly sent news from Mexico's 32 states, many of which were not covered by the country's newspapers that are published nationwide because almost all of them are based in Mexico City. Analysts said this is the latest chapter in an attempt by López Obrador to control media, scientific, and public cultural organizations belonging to the government.
