The pastor of Espíritu Santo parish in the municipality of Mulukuku in Nicaragua's northern Caribbean autonomous region, Óscar Danilo Benavidez Dávila, was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison for the crime of spreading fake news to the detriment of the state. The 49-year-old priest, detained since Aug. 14, was sentenced in a farcical trial by Judge Nancy del Carmen Aguirre Gudiel, head of Managua's 10th Criminal Trial District Court, in a closed hearing. He is the first priest in the world convicted of fake news.
