Peru: "The Taking of Lima," a day marked by political terrorism, carnage, and fatalities
Violence characterized yesterday's "Taking of Lima." Vandalism made coordinated attempts to take over the airports in the southern cities of Arequipa, Juliaca, and Cusco
Police and journalists in Lima were attacked with stones and bricks by attackers who wrecked the city's historic district's streets. On live television, President Boluarte criticized those responsible for the unrest since December 2022. The greatest fights occurred in the Puno department in Macusani, involving "ronaldos", one of the many rural vigilante groups that arose during the Sendero Luminoso guerilla period. A woman and a guy, two of its members, passed away. Radical gangs destroyed public facilities in Macusani all night after hearing about the two deaths, starting with the police station, which was set ablaze on par with the local tribunal. After going silent for several weeks, Betsy Chávez, the final premier of the Castillo administration, seized the chance to come back. "There are more of us than police!" she said.
