Gustavo Petro uses Bolivar's sword at the inauguration ceremony while quoting Flores D'Arcais, Toni Negri, and economist Mariana Mazzucato in a speech evocative of Chávez's call for a "new peace."
In a speech evoking Venezuelan tyrant Hugo Chávez's initial years in power, Petro vowed to rule with "open doors" and a focus on collaborative projects for Latin America. First, he said the security forces would no longer be involved in criminal activity. Then he added, "from today, state intelligence services will not pursue the opposition, the free press, or individuals who hold different opinions."
