Following criticism of her work, Bachelet resigns from the UN Human Rights Commission.
Former Chilean Socialist President Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated yesterday that she would not seek re-election to her current term, which expires next August 31. The renunciation comes after many human rights defenders chastised her for her recent travel to China. Her visit to Beijing was to confirm claims of oppression and abuses against the Uighur Muslim minority in the province of Xinjiang in the northwest, but her findings were underwhelming. "The tour could not have gone any better for the Chinese government in its effort to cover up mass detentions and atrocities in Xinjiang," said US Human Rights Watch director Keneth Roth, who described the trip as "a complete catastrophe”. The same goes for Cuba, where Bachelet de facto did nothing to stop the dictatorship's suppression of the opposition.
