In absolute terms, Nicaragua relies more on trade with the United States than any other Central American country, and it is the only one that maintains a surplus in that exchange with the North American power. U.S. Census Bureau numbers show that trade between the two countries climbed by 21.9% in 2022, and by 67.1% for the previous two years, despite repeated threats from Washington to cut off such assistance as a form of punishment for the Ortega government. The United States trade deficit with Nicaragua widened by 25.9 percent in 2022.
