What is next in Venezuela? MarÃa Corina Machado explained it here to the Center for Strategic & International Studies👇
She won over 90% of the votes in the opposition’s primary election but remains barred by the Maduro regime from participating in the 2024 presidential election
While negotiations between the democratic opposition and the Maduro regime over electoral reforms and freeing political prisoners concluded in the Barbados Accords, progress towards ensuring the regime’s commitments has stalled. There are currently no conditions for holding free and fair presidential elections, which the regime agreed to hold in the latter half of this year. In this context, the opposition in Venezuela faces significant and mounting challenges.
Machado discussed the presidential campaign, necessary electoral reforms, and the state of play in Venezuela. The discussion also explored options for the United States and the international community to pressure Maduro into holding a free and fair election and support the opposition and allies of democratic change.
